| 内容記述 | According to a previous study, the sentence `The man walked along the river' is semantically anomalous for some native speakers of English. The study states that the reason that the sentence is semantically anomalous is that the meaning of the sentence is nearly the same as that of `The man walked on the river'. Therefore, the study states that as `The man walked along the river' is illogical, it must be derived from `The man walked along the bank of the river' or `The man walked along the path by/close to the river'. However, we point out that the preposition along is a one-dimensional preposition and the preposition on in `The man walked on the river' is a two-dimensional preposition, so the events that the two sentences, `The man walked along the river' and `The man walked on the river', represent are completely different, and we argue that the sentence `The man walked along the river' is not illogical. | |||||
