| 内容記述 | This paper aims to clarify the development of the complementation of the verb clear co-occurring with the prepositions of and from. Our investigations based on EEBO and COHA show that the ‘NP-AGENT clear NP-LOCATION(HUMAN) of NP-LOCATUM(AN)’ form and the ‘NP-AGENT clear NP-LOCATION(HUMAN) from NP-LOCATUM(AN)’ form, both of which were derived from the syntactic structures of the verbs of removal in Old English, were dominant in the Modern English period, but in Present-day English the former was gradually replaced by the ‘NP-AGENT clear NP-LOCATION of NP-LOCATUM(CN)’ form and the latter the ‘NP-AGENT clear NP-LOCATUM(CN) from NP-LOCATION(CN)’ form. | |||||
