内容記述 | This paper aims to reveal the development of the complements of the verbs empty and drain occurring in the ‘NP-AGENT V NP-LOCATION of NP-LOCATUM’ frame and the ‘NP-AGENT V NP-LOCATUM from NP-LOCATION’ frame in the history of the English language. The syntactic frames are subclassed into four types: (a) NP-AGENT V NP-LOCATION of NP-LOCATUM (CN), (b) NP-AGENT V NP-LOCATION of NP-LOCATUM (AN), (c) NP-AGENT V NP-LOCATUM (CN) from NP-LOCATION, (d) NP-AGENT V NP-LOCATUM (AN) from NP-LOCATION. Our investigation, which is based upon data gathered from EEBO (Early English Books Online) and COHA (The Corpus of Historical American English), shows that regarding the verb empty the ‘NP-AGENT V NP-LOCATION of NP-LOCATUM (AN)’ frame is most dominant in the Early Modern English period, and from the Late Modern English period to the Present-day English period the number of examples of the ‘NP-AGENT V NP-LOCATION of NP-LOCATUM (CN)’ frame is much larger than that of the other frames whereas regarding the verb drain the number of examples of the ‘NP-AGENT V NP-LOCATION of NP-LOCATUM (CN)’ frame and that of the ‘NP-AGENT V NP-LOCATUM (CN) from NP-LOCATION’ frame are almost the same in the Modern English period and the Present-day English period; however, the ‘NP-AGENT V NP-LOCATION of NP-LOCATUM (AN)’ frame is far more dominant than the other syntactic frames throughout the history of the language. | |||||||
