| 内容記述 | The verb clean, one of the representative verbs of removal, is a locative alternation verb. In this paper we investigate the development of the complement of the verb based upon data gathered from EEBO (Early English Books Online) and COHA (The Corpus of Historical American English) and divide the complement of the verb into four types: (a) NP-AGENT V NP-LOCATION of NP-LOCATUM (CN), (b) NP-AGENT V NP-LOCATION of NP-LOCATUM (AN), (c) NP-AGENT V NP-LOCATUM from NP-LOCATION, (d) NP-AGENT V NP-LOCATION from NP-LOCATUM, among which type (b) did not develop in the history of the English language, which has much to do with the semantic rivalry between clean and cleanse. | |||||||
