Recently the deteriorated bearings have been observed remarkably and many of them need to replace. Whereas in the field of seismic design of highway bridge the advanced seismic design code was provided and several seismic reinforcing works were developed for existing bridges, the bridge reinforcements for earthquakes have not been made a progress in the local governments for the reason of poor maintenance budget. The repair work by replacing the deteriorated bearing with seismic-isolation bearing is developed to satisfy the seismic requirement. In this study, optimum design method is developed for seismic-isolation bearing in time of replacing deteriorated bearing in existing bridge. The optimum design problem is formulated to find the size of seismic-isolation bearing considering the constraints related to the fabrication of bearing and performance at ultimate state due to the level 2 earthquakes.
