A questionnaire survey was administered to 135 male and female students enrolled in years 1-4 in the Department of Sports and Health Science, Fukui University of Technology. Questionnaires were used to determine the participants’ daily smoking status, social nicotine dependence, and understanding of the effects of passive smoke exposure. Social nicotine dependence was assessed using the Kano Test for Social Nicotine Dependence (KTSND), which indicated that 34.6% of students aged ≧ 20 years had a smoking habit. In addition, the social nicotine dependence score evaluated by the KTSND was higher than that of other university surveys. Furthermore, KTSND scores were significantly higher among students whose parents and friends, as well as older university students were smokers.
