The advantages of small modular reactors include high inherent safety and small initial investment. However, because natural circulation is used to enhance safety in the accident, it has been pointed out that the thermal efficiency is low and that economies of scale, such as those of large commercial reactors, are not available, making them fundamentally less economical. As one of the means to overcome these disadvantages, design modifications to increase the core outlet temperature and improve thermal efficiency have been considered. However, increasing the core outlet temperature is contrary to high burnup in terms of cladding corrosion and pellet-cladding interaction.
