However, there are such many problems to be solved as the nitrogen oxides (NO_X) generated under an excess oxygen condition and the particulate matters (PM) under a locally rich condition of fuel. The after-treatment devices are necessary to reduce both the NO_X and PM, however the generation control of them in the engine cylinder is most important. Therefore, EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) for the reduction of NO_X by lowering oxygen concentration and combustion temperature, and BDF (Bio Diesel Fuel) application for the reduction of PM by combustion improvement in the cylinder caused by the oxygen included in the fuel are attracted attention. In the paper, the EGR and BDF are applied to a small Diesel engine for the test, and the performance is examined under some conditions.
